Delightful Escape to the Black Hills, South Dakota

This property is called the Copper Canyon Lodge. What a fabulous place to call home in the Black Hills of South Dakota!
Pup Adventures in the Pines: Our Black Hills Escape
We’ve always been suckers for the “off the beaten path” vibe, and our latest adventure in October 2024 took us straight to the sprawling acreage of our dreams. If you’re looking to swap city sirens for rustling pines, let us introduce you to the Copper Canyon Lodge.
Tucked away on the outskirts of Rapid City, South Dakota, this adorable rental cottage wasn’t just a place to sleep—it was our cozy home base for an entire week of Black Hills magic.
Our Favorite Out Of The Way Hideout
The cottage sits on 20+ acres of pure, unadulterated South Dakota beauty. It’s about 25 minutes outside of Rapid City toward Nemo, which means you’re close enough to civilization to grab a latte but far enough away to hear your own thoughts.
There’s even a creek running behind the cottage below a bluff. It’s the kind of scenery that makes you want to throw on a flannel, grab a camera, and pretend you’re in a National Geographic special.
The "Pup-Approved" Playground
Let’s talk about the real bonus at this property: the wide open spaces. With 20+ acres to explore, our pups were in absolute heaven. The entry was a breeze (the door was unlocked and the key was waiting inside—talk about small-town trust!), and we were greeted by the kindest owners, Ruth Ann and her husband.
A few highlights from the dogs’ perspective:
- The Horses: The owners have a few horses on-site. It was great social hour… though our dogs decided that “horse snacks” (you know the kind) were a local delicacy.
- The Mouser: Our dog Gracie took her job as “Ranch Hand” very seriously. She managed to catch a few field mice, much to the owner’s absolute delight!
The Cozy Cabin Life
The cottage itself is one big, happy, open room. It features a living area, a dining table, two comfy Queen beds, and a full-sized bathroom.
Now, let’s talk logistics. The kitchen is a “mini” situation (mini-fridge included). We’re the type of travelers who love a home-cooked breakfast, so we had to get a little creative! Between the drip coffee maker (a total lifesaver) and the electric skillet that was provided, we managed to whip up some legendary morning feasts.
Pro Tip: If you’re staying for a week, plan for the “laundry run.” There’s no washer/dryer on-site, so I made a couple of trips into Rapid City to keep our clothes and dog blankets smelling less like… well, horse snacks.
Chilly Nights & Digital Detours
Since we visited in October, the nights got wonderfully crisp. Thankfully, the cottage was stocked with plenty of extra blankets, heaters, and fans. We were snug as bugs!
As for the tech side of things? Let’s just say the WiFi in October 2024 was “meditative” (a.k.a. very difficult to catch). However, word on the street is the owners have upgraded the connection recently, so you can probably post your mountain selfies in real-time now!
I Really Loved…
The best part about Copper Canyon Lodge is how perfectly positioned it is for exploring:
- Mt. Rushmore: A quick 35-minute hop.
- Custer State Park: About 1 hour and 15 minutes (worth every second for the buffalo!).
- The Badlands: A scenic 1 hour and 40 minute trek.
Overall, it was clean, cozy, and perfectly “us.” We left with full hearts, tired dogs, and only a little bit of mud on our boots.
