A Vintage Stay On Route 66
When you’re road-tripping through the Texas Panhandle in August, you aren’t just looking for a place to sleep—you’re looking for a cool haven and, if you’re my dogs, a very specific type of luxury. In August 2023, we pulled into Amarillo and found a Route 66-themed cottage that was so charming we practically wanted to move in.
The "Green Carpet" Treatment
Let’s talk about the backyard first, because Gracie and Jaxon certainly would. Back home, “lawn” isn’t exactly a primary feature of our landscape. When we let the pups into the backyard here, they didn’t just walk—they performed a high-speed, synchronized “grass dance.”
Watching them burn off their “stuck-in-the-car” energy on a lush, green yard was a highlight for all of us. While they were busy doing zoomies, the hubby and I were able to unwind on the patio, which comes fully equipped with a BBQ and plenty of seating.
Retro Vibes & Modern Comforts
Our host, Michelle, was exceptionally kind and has done a masterful job of leaning into the vintage Route 66 era without sacrificing modern comfort.
- The Decor: The house is filled with strategically placed vintage items that had me wandering from room to room just to admire the history.
- The Living Spaces: Everything felt “homey.” The living room was cozy, the WiFi was fast, and the central AC was a lifesaver in the August heat.
- The Garage Surprise: In a clever move, the single garage has been converted into a laundry and game room. Yes, there’s a washer and dryer (my favorite travel luxury!), but there’s also a foosball table for when you’re feeling competitive.
Practical Matters
For a quick overnight stay, this house punched way above its weight class:
- The Kitchen: Fully stocked and featuring—you guessed it—the all-important drip coffee maker.
- The Bed: We slept in the king-sized bed, and it was fabulously comfortable. Between the clean linens and the quiet neighborhood, we were out like lights.
- The Location: You are right in the heart of the action. Botanical gardens, ballparks, and more restaurants than you could possibly visit in one night are all just a stone’s throw away.
I Really Loved…
This house wasn’t just a place to crash; it was a delightful part of the adventure. We only wish we could have stayed again on the return leg of our trip! If you’re traveling with dogs who appreciate a good lawn and humans who appreciate a clean, themed, and welcoming home, this Amarillo “gem” is a must-stop. It will remain on our “go to” list for a stop over if we’re in the area again.
