For a truly wild adventure, we booked this 100 year old cabin in Luna, New Mexico. It did not disappoint with its rustic charm and large acreage for the pups.
Finding the Hideout: Luna, New Mexico
In February 2026, we decided to hop across the Arizona border—just a stone’s throw from Alpine—to the tiny, remote town of Luna. Our target? The Jesse James Hideout. If you’re looking for “rustic charm,” this place doesn’t just have it; it hoards it. The logs are weathered and worn on the outside, looking every bit their 100 years, but inside, it’s a beautifully preserved piece of history.
A Mud-Free Miracle
Normally, February in this neck of the woods is a full-blown winter wonderland. We were braced for snow boots and shovels, but the universe (and an unusually warm winter) handed us a “mud and ice-free” blessing instead. For us—and more importantly, for our two pups—it made navigating the 150-acre property a total breeze. Plus, we could park right near the front door. Convenience is king, even in the wilderness!
150 Acres of "Where’s the Neighbor?"
If you have a “people-quota” like we do, this is paradise. With 150 acres to explore and exactly one neighbor in sight, the dogs were convinced they’d been promoted to Ranch Lords. Our host, Paul, made entry as easy as it gets: he left the key in the door and gave us all the proactive info we needed.
The cabin has been updated just enough to keep you from actually living like an outlaw. It’s got modern wiring and appliances, but it’s kept its soul—complete with old Western books scattered around. Zane Grey and John Wayne were our best friends for the several days we visited.
Small Footprint, Big Comfort
The cabin is compact but clever. The living room features two recliners and a wood stove—the ultimate setup for ignoring your phone. The enjoyment of ignoring the high tech world was beyond our expectations. The kitchen is small but mighty; we cooked almost every meal there.
Survival Tip: Luna is remote. There isn’t a Starbucks or a Safeway around the corner, so we packed in all our supplies. Luckily, the drip coffee maker was there to save our mornings. There’s a cute two-stool bar for dining, which was all the “nightlife” we needed.
The Luxury of... A Laundry Room?
The main bedroom sports a comfortable king-sized bed, while a smaller room has a twin. But the real MVP? The bathroom. It’s unexpectedly huge and—wait for it—has a washer and dryer. In a 100-year-old cabin, that feels like finding a gold mine. Paul even stocked it with extra linens and toiletries, so we weren’t exactly roughing it.
Modern Tech in the Middle of Nowhere
Despite being off the beaten path, the WiFi (shoutout to Starlink) was impressive. We also appreciated the heaters in every room. While it wasn’t the freezing winter we expected, having a heater in the bathroom is a luxury I will never apologize for enjoying.
I Really Loved…
We spent hours on the front porch just soaking in the silence and warm days (for February). The only “noise pollution” was the occasional moo from a nearby cow—which is a significant upgrade from traffic and sirens.
We took the host’s map and hiked the trail up the hill behind the cabin. The view of the valley below was spectacular and perfectly summed up our motto: “It’s an adventure.” It wasn’t fancy, but it had more character in one weathered log than most modern hotels have in an entire floor.
