The "Old Firehouse" Retreat: A Cozy, In-Town Getaway
I kicked off October 2025 with a delightful stay at a unique little spot. Rumor has it this vacation unit may have been Payson’s original fire station back in the day—and you can still feel that historical character! It’s attached to the property owner’s main house, making for a perfectly manageable and cozy retreat.
The Warmest Welcome in Town
My experience started off perfectly when the owner, John, met me upon arrival. He was incredibly hospitable and kind, instantly making me feel welcome. His availability and proactive communication proved to be a lifesaver later on!
Quaint Charm and Great Amenities
The unit itself is small, but it was absolutely adequate for my needs as a solo traveler (or perfect for a couple). It feels equipped for a quick, charming getaway rather than an extended stay, but it maximizes the space beautifully.
- Cozy Living: There’s a sweet little kitchen and dining area, plus a lovely outdoor sitting veranda—perfect for morning coffee.
- The Bedroom: The good-sized bedroom hosts a comfortable queen-sized bed set on an adjustable frame. The TV is also located here, along with a cozy fireplace for chillier evenings and, surprisingly, a washing machine tucked neatly into a cabinet!
- Comfort & Cleanliness: All the linens, extra pillows, blankets, and towels were fresh and spotless.
Coffee Lover's Dream Kitchen
The kitchen area might be small, but it punches above its weight, especially in the caffeine department! It boasts a fabulous espresso machine and, much to my personal delight, a small drip coffee maker. You also have a full-sized refrigerator and a small range, though I found the available cookware to be a bit limited.
Perfectly Positioned
Location-wise, this little spot is great! It’s conveniently located right in town, making it easy to stroll to a few local restaurants or grab necessities from the convenience store close by.
My Only Note on Privacy
Since this unit sits on a somewhat busy road, I did note one important thing for future guests: the front, main doors do not have any window coverings. As a solo traveler, I may have felt a little vulnerable after dark wishing I could cover them up for extra privacy. I didn’t have any problems however and was able to enjoy a beautiful night.
The Morning I Won't Forget!
My stay ended with a dramatic flourish! I got up bright and early, made my coffee (thank goodness!), and just moments later—BOOM!—the transformer blew up right behind the house!
John immediately notified me about what happened (yes, I definitely heard it!), and while he couldn’t predict when the power would be restored, he was so kind and helpful. I gathered my things in the house with no problem, despite the lack of lighting, and checked out before the power returned, but John’s timely communication made a stressful moment manageable.
I Really Loved…
I love the history of all things in this town and although I wasn’t able to find any historical documents to confirm the firehouse was at this location, it does appear that the larger than normal front doors and the tilework at the entrance alludes to the possibility of the unit having been a previous firehouse. The house is called “The Florian House”.
This is a cute, clean, and unique retreat for anyone needing a short, peaceful break. With John as the host, you know you’re in great hands!
