Puppy Love Roadtrip: A Rustic Stop Over in Duncan
In April 2023, we hit the road for a very special mission: bringing home the newest member of the family, Jaxon! When you’re introducing a bouncy new pup to a seasoned pro like Gracie, you need a spot that is calm, quiet, and—most importantly—pet-friendly.
We found a 985-square-foot gem just north of Duncan, Oklahoma, that was the perfect “neutral ground” for our growing pack. We stayed here on our way back home.
Wide Open Spaces: Petunias and Porches
Located on the outskirts of town, this guest house sits on a gorgeous piece of property that practically screams “pride of ownership.” Before we even stepped inside, I was won over by the adorable covered front porch. The host, Pam, had the most beautiful flowers in containers along the patio—it felt like the house was giving us a big, floral hug.
Pam was a dream host. Since she lives on the property, check-in was seamless. she was incredibly attentive to our needs with the new pup, gave us the “locals only” scoop on where to eat, and made sure we had everything we needed to get settled.
Rustic Charm Through and Through
The interior of this guest house is packed with character. If you’re a fan of rustic décor, you’ll be in heaven here. It’s “spiffy,” clean, and incredibly roomy for a guest house.
- The Sleep Test: The king-sized bed was plush and a genuine delight. After a day of puppy-wrangling, sinking into those spotless linens was pure bliss.
- The Little Things: Pam left light snacks on the kitchen table (a lifesaver!) and the bathroom was fully stocked with the essentials.
- Thoughtful Design: One of the most impressive features was that the entire layout is disability friendly. It’s wide, open, and easy to navigate, which we truly appreciated.
The Great Outdoors: Fire Pits and Fur-Babies
Since we were there to help Gracie and Jaxon bond, the outdoor space was our favorite “space.” There’s a large concrete slab with a fire pit and plenty of seating where we spent hours watching the pups sniff out their new friendship.
The property is so peaceful that you might even spot some local wildlife if you’re quiet enough! The owners even offer guest access to their swimming pool—we didn’t have time for a dip this trip, but it’s a wonderful perk for a longer stay.
A Traveler’s Note
If you’re planning a longer retreat, just keep in mind there is no washer or dryer here. For our “puppy pick-up” pit stop, it wasn’t a problem at all, but it’s worth noting for the light-packers or long-term visitors.
I Really Loved…
This stay was exactly what we needed: slow-paced, welcoming, and out-of-the-way. It gave our two dogs the perfect environment to adjust to one another and allow hubby and I to unwind. If you find yourself near Duncan, skip the hotel and head to this rustic retreat. Just tell them Gracie and Jaxon sent you!
